GOES Imager Spectral Response Functions

GOES-8 through GOES-13 Spectral Response Functions

(Revised, July 2008)

The latest versions of GOES-8 through GOES-13  Imager spectral response functions (SRFs) are now available for download. All of them were provided by ITT, the instruments' manufacturer.

GOES Imager Spectral Response Function Download Table

During the GOES-13 post-launch tests in 2006, a cold bias, -2.4±0.6 K, in Imager channel 6 (13.3 micrometer) was reported by University of Wisconsin. The cold bias was identified via comparisons with high-spectral Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) data, comparisons with broad-band High-resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS) data on NOAA-15 and NOAA-16 and a limited number of forward model comparisons. The bias is consistent with a spectral response shift on the order of 4 cm-1 to the original spectral response function used in the ground system processing.

To respond to the GOES-13 Imager channel-6 cold bias, ITT re-evaluated the spectral response functions and came out with the updates which have a 1-wavenumber shift. The updated channel-6 spectral response functions are included in the above GOES-13 download link. The channel-6 related updates are also included in the Calibration and Alignment Handbook information for GOES-13 and implemented in the GOES-13 operations. In addition, the GOES Calibration web site updated all the coefficients involving GOES-13 Imager channel 6 for Conversion of GVAR Infrared Data to Scene Radiance or Temperature.
